W. Vernie Reed Memorial Scholarship applications now available!

W. Vernie Reed Scholarship:
A scholarship program for certain members of the Laborers’ International Union has been established as a living memorial to the late W. Vernie Reed, General Secretary-Treasurer of the International Union.


Through the generosity of Brother Reed’s friends and associates, a self perpetuating fund will provide a program of yearly scholarships to assist eligible worthy students in furthering their four (4) year undergraduate education. The first award was made in the Spring of 1981. Scholarships are usually awarded before July.

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce it will be awarding the following scholarships:

Get your ballots in!

Ballots are out and due by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2.


You can mail your ballot, as long as it is postmarked by the USPS by Tuesday, or you can drop it off at a ballot dropbox near you.


Voting in elections is important every year. We use our union's power to elect officials who support our work, believe we have the right to come together to create safe work places with better pay and better benefits.


The below list of candidates are endorsed by Laborers' Local 252.


How you vote is up to you, we believe these candidates support our union's values.

2021 W. Vernie Reed Memorial Scholarship Applications


Applications are now available for the 2021 W. Vernie Reed Memorial Scholarship.



A native Tacoman, Brother Reed began working as a hard-rock driller on the Grand Coulee Dam in 1934. He became a Laborer, and was elected to office at the Tacoma local in 1941. From there, he worked for the district council, eventually being asked to head the organizing department of Laborers International in 1960. Five years later he was elected general secretary-treasurer.



Through the generosity of Brother Reed’s friends and associates, yearly scholarships are available to assist eligible students in furthering their four year undergraduate education. The first was made in the spring of 1981.
