Last week, Brother Justin Baker was awared the Governor's Lifesaving Award. Justin's actions on the jobsite saved the life of his coworker.
From the Washington State Governor's Industrial Safety & Health Advisory Board, and the Department of Labor & Industies:

TUMWATER — No one leaves for work thinking they’ll soon be faced with a life-threatening situation, and none of us really knows how we would react until it happens.
Today, the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) and the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board are honoring 14 heroic Washington workers as part of the 70th annual Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference.
“You never know when an emergency will occur, but the quick thinking and fast reactions of the Lifesaving Award honorees reassure us that our coworkers and sometimes perfect strangers are there to help,” said Craig Blackwood, acting assistant director, Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
Three of this year’s recipients are crewmembers of the MV Whatcom Chief ferry. Captain Gary Poole noticed a kayak floating with nobody inside. As he steered the ferry closer to the kayak, he saw a young man and small child in the water. Deck crewmembers, Tom Phillips and Doug Cash, pulled the kayakers onto the ferry where they warmed up and soon reunited with a family member.
Along with that heroic rescue, award winners this year are honored for performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator to help jump start a worker’s heart after suffering cardiac arrest, stabilizing a worker suffering a seizure, and taking a co-worker with a completely blocked artery to the hospital.
Sometimes, despite best efforts, there are tragic results. This year’s Lifesaving Humanitarian Award goes to Maddie Froyd. She did everything she could to try to save a man who crashed his car through a fence and went down an embankment while she was working at the Bainbridge Athletic Club. The 73-year-old man later died at the hospital from an apparent medical condition. Froyd is being recognized for the heroic act she performed trying to save a life.
To be eligible for this year’s Lifesaving Award, the heroic act must have occurred during work hours between June 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021 and the nominee must have performed hands-on aid.

(August 5, 2021) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:
I was shocked and saddened by the death of my friend and brother, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. The world has lost a true working-class warrior, a prophetic voice for justice, and a champion of the powerless and the dispossessed. A third-generation coal miner who became the youngest leader of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), Rich never forgot where he came from, never forgot the value of hard work and those who do it, and knew that working people, from mine workers to Laborers to everyone who toils for an hourly wage, are the greatest asset of our nation and our world. He will go down as one of the great leaders in labor history.
Working with Richard Trumka was one of the highlights of my career in the Labor Movement. Whether pushing for greater infrastructure funding, calling for greater workplace safety, advocating for comprehensive immigration reform, standing up for racial justice, or turning out the vote to elect President Biden and Vice-President Harris, Rich was always smart, strategic, tough, and tenacious. The impact of his career, his life, and his legacy will be felt for decades to come, not only by the countless working men and women whose lives he helped improve, but by the next generation of labor leaders for whom he served, and continues to serve, as a role model and inspiration.
On behalf of the 500,000 proud, strong, and united men and women of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), I offer my sympathy and condolences to the entire Trumka family. While Rich’s life ended far too soon, he will live on in the cherished memories of all those who knew and worked with him.

Washington, D.C. (September 11, 2020) – Terry O’Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers’ International Union of North America – made the following statement today:
"It was 19 years ago today, on September 11, that terrorists attacked our nation in a vicious and cowardly assault, killing nearly 3,000 men and women. We will never forget the tragic events of that day or the victims and the families of those who perished. Likewise, we will always remember and honor the heroes — those who responded, cleaned up and rebuilt the World Trade Center and our Pentagon. While many fled, they raced toward the disaster, risked their lives and many suffered debilitating health issues due to hazardous materials exposure. Our memorials to that day and our people are fitting and solemn structures. Equally so, the potential of our nation of unity in the face of challenge, courage in the face of the unknown, and resurgence in the face of loss are living memorials which can continue to guide us.
On behalf of myself, General Secretary-Treasurer Armand E. Sabitoni, and the entire LIUNA General Executive Board, we remember those lost on September 11 and share our sincere gratitude with those who responded with such courage and strength to the terrible attacks."
